Nationality Human / Graphic Novel
My entry for this years jonathan cape / observer / comica graphic short story price.
Austria and Germany are highly affected by the refugee crisis and I have spent my summer back in my hometown in Austria working in a refugee camp. It was a really emotional summer because it seemed that racism has become something legitim. The media has caused a huge and very very worrying racist uproar. I found this feeling really oppressive. This whole experience inspired me to my graphic novel “nationality human”.
It’s about the power of media, jealousy and how your own insecurity and anger can not only hurt the people around you but mainly yourself. The protagonist in my graphic novel seems to drown in his own sweat, his own anger and got rescued by a refugee at the end.
